As you well know the credit industry as a whole is undergoing major changes. Credit is not so freely available as before and standards have been raised regarding who is accepted and who is not. People with bad credit are having a tougher time getting cards with relatively low interest rates. Even people with good credit are finding it more difficult to get the favorable rates.

However, there has been one change that's been positive as of late. The CARD Act of 2009 has just been passed in the Senate. CARD stands for Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure. Several good things come out of this for consumer protection such as: The credit card issuer must sent you billings at least 21 days before it is due and banning interest rate increases on existing balances unless the account is 60 days delinquent. These and several other benefits are included in the credit card reform act recently passed. The House has their own version which is very similar. Now it's just a matter of sorting out small differences and passing the bill to the President for signing.

Card Sense

Credit cards make purchasing easier and help keep an accounting of your spending habits. If you can't pay off each month's total purchases made on the credit card, consider paying an amount that is double or more of the minimum amount. This will keep finance charges down and make room for other future charges. This keeps your card from being used up (a.k.a. max'ed out). A max'ed out card quickly becomes a burden since you can no longer use it.
